February – The Moment Everything Changed
When Washington County Hospital suspended operations, the community faced the loss of a vital source of care. But this was not the end of the hospital’s story. It was the beginning of a determined journey to reopen its doors, restore essential services, and build a stronger future for healthcare in Washington County.
May – Washington County Hospital reopens
The bankruptcy court authorized the hospital to reopen, and Affinity Health Partners was brought in to manage and operate the hospital during the bankruptcy process. Although ownership had not yet transferred, Affinity Health Partners was entrusted with managing and operating the hospital during the bankruptcy process while the purchase was finalized. The reopening restored emergency care and other essential healthcare services to Washington County after more than two months without a hospital. The hospital’s emergency department reopened, restoring local access to urgent and lifesaving care after the county had been without hospital services for more than two months.

July – Inpatient care is restored under the new management team
First patients returned to the inpatient floor. This was a significant second phase after the initial May reopening, under the management of Affinity Health Partners.
October – New Swing-bed rehab

March – Women’s Health Services Expand
WRMC establishes the Norma Llorraine Avignone Women’s Health Center, bringing advanced 3D mammography and additional diagnostic services closer to women throughout the region.
August – Martin General Hospital Closure
Martin General Hospital closed after years of financial challenges, declining patient volumes, and unsustainable operating costs, leaving a significant healthcare gap in Martin County.

May – Williamston Primary Care Clinic

September – First Shriners Children’s telehealth clinic is scheduled at WRMC

October – Strength Through Reorganization
To strengthen the organization for the future, WRMC entered Chapter 11 reorganization, a legal process that allowed the hospital to continue serving patients while restructuring its financial obligations. Throughout the process, the hospital remained open, employees continued caring for patients, and services continued without interruption.
November – Secures NC DHHS Telehealth grant
WRMC was awarded a North Carolina DHHS Telehealth Grant to create a regional ObGyn Telehealth Network, helping improve access to specialized obstetrical and gynecological care for patients throughout eastern North Carolina.

September – Emerging Stronger
WRMC successfully completed its financial reorganization and emerged from Chapter 11 with a stronger foundation for the future. The successful restructuring positioned WRMC for continued growth, expanded services, and long-term stability while remaining committed to providing exceptional healthcare close to home.
September – Duke University School of Nursing affiliation is formalized
WRMC announced a strategic affiliation with the Duke University School of Nursing, creating opportunities for graduate nursing education, advanced clinical training, collaborative quality improvement initiatives, and community health research. Through this partnership, Duke master’s-level nursing students complete clinical rotations at WRMC, WRMC clinicians serve as adjunct faculty, and both organizations work together to advance patient care, improve healthcare quality, and strengthen the future of rural healthcare.

June – Ripe for Revival partnership and Plymouth hub development
WRMC joined Ripe for Revival in a community health initiative focused on improving access to nutritious food, preventive healthcare, health education, and wellness services throughout eastern North Carolina.
